The 1976 Olympics are a good example of the dramatic ways in which international relations can shift over time. At that point, Canada was hosting the Olympics in Montreal.
But there was a problem: Canada had a “One China Policy”, they only recognized The Peoples’ Republic of China (aka mainland China, the Communist one) as the legit government of China. At the time, Taiwan called itself “The Republic of China” because members of the government had fled mainland China when the civil war broke out. Both considered themselves the legit governments of China.
Because of Canada’s relations with the PRC, Canada told the RoC that they could only compete in the Montreal Olympics under a different name- Taiwan. America went to bat for the Taiwanese, but Canada’s Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau wouldn’t budge. This led to US President Gerald Ford saying of Trudeau “he’s being a real bastard,” and in the end, Taiwan boycotted the Olympics.
